The Cost of Food

How We Get Our Food

Hearts, Hands, and Hope purchases food through a partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank — at a fraction of retail cost, but not for free. That partnership means every dollar we spend stretches significantly further than it would at a regular grocery store.

For example: a box of macaroni and cheese costs us $0.45 through this partnership, versus $1.79 at a regular grocery store — nearly 4x the food for the same amount of money.

What it Costs

  • Each meal costs $0.71–$1.00
  • Each food bag (14 meals) costs $10–$15, depending on the proteins and fruit included
  • We spend $1,500–$2,000 every week feeding children and families across Seminole County

What's In a Food Bag?

Every bag is packed with 14 kid-friendly meals that need no refrigeration and little to no cooking — items a child can open and prepare on their own:

  • Soup or ramen
  • Boxed macaroni and cheese
  • Canned pasta, or pasta with sauce
  • Canned tuna or chicken
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Oatmeal or cereal
  • Granola bars or Nutri-Grain bars
  • Peanut butter (every couple of months)
